Variety was informed by insiders that the project had a director after NASA announced their intent to collaborate with Tom Cruise and Elon Musk’s SpaceX on a movie that would be shot in space. The mystery film will be directed by Doug Liman, who previously collaborated with Cruise on “Edge of Tomorrow” and “American Made.” A portion of the film will be shot in space. Deadline Hollywood first reported several weeks ago that Cruise and Musk had been discussing plans to film the project in orbit with NASA, and NASA later confirmed the news.
Although Liman’s hiring is a step in the right direction for the project, the movie presently lacks a distributor and its precise storyline specifics are unknown.
Although Paramount has denied it’s the same movie, Liman and Cruise were working on Liman’s passion project “Luna Park” there and obviously had an interest in making a space-related movie. A group of miscreants go to the moon to steal an energy source in the story “Lunar Park.” The film will be written by Liman, and Cruise will produce it.
The project was initially approved in 2020 by Jim Dridgestine, the NASA director at the time. Elon Musk’s SpaceX was also supposed to work on the movie, according to a report from Deadline at the time.
The creation of a content and entertainment studio and “Multimedia purpose arena” Space station module was announced by Space Entertainment Enterprise and Axiom Space in January of this year. The project, known as SEE-1, would connect to the Axiom station, a commercial module envisioned for the international space station, and is scheduled to launch in late 2024.
The production is unlikely to start anytime soon due to Cruise’s schedule as well as the extensive pre-production required to make this shoot possible. The COVID-19 epidemic has forced him to postpone production on the next two “Mission: Impossible” films, which he intends to shoot back-to-back, and there is no estimated time when it will resume.
CAA represents both Cruise and Liman. The news was initially reported by Deadline Hollywood.
