There are countless times in the series Death Note where Light could have easily avoided death and stayed as an anonymous killer “Kira”.
Here we will be discussing in detail how Light could’ve easily escaped L and the Task force. Light had many opportunities but his pride never let him take those chances. Some of the points are:-
- The first one is obvious one that happened in the very first episode. L plays a trick to narrow down Kira’s location by having a criminal who is sentenced to death go live to the public. This was a trick to provoke Kira to kill him. Light does exactly as L expected him to and publicly kills him. Now this is a really huge step for the investigation as it is later revealed that this event was only telecasted in Japan which means that Kira has to be in Japan and not anywhere else. Light’s mistake also gave confidential information to L that Kira can kill without being at the scene. L also got intel that Kira needs a name and a face. Without these two things Kira can’t kill. If Light had kept his ego under control and if hadn’t reacted then L would have had gone through a lot of trouble to find in which country Kira resides. This was a clear loss for Light but still it is a huge challenge to find Kira in a populated country as Japan.
- The next time L came close to Light happened a few days later, here as well Light could’ve avoided getting exposed. This is what happened, L monitors Kira’s killing pattern and makes a claim that Kira is probably a student because he’s killing only after school hours that is in the night. After L makes this claim this information is stored in the Kira Task Force’s computer and their files which is accessible only to certain members of the task force. Later on, Light hacks his father’s (who is a chief at the Task Force) computer and accesses the confidential files. Light finds out that L already suspects a student. Light at this moment immediately changes his killing pattern and starts killing criminals at random times throughout the day. This was again a mistake as L thinks that how come Kira changed his pattern exactly when the Task Force started to suspect a student. L further deduces the situation and says that the only people who knew that the Task Force suspected a student were the members of the Task Force. Which means that Kira has to be a family member of a police officer who has access to the confidential files. Here again L narrowed Kira’s location from the entire population of Japan to a family member of a police officer. Ryuk the Shinigami actually tells Light that he shouldn’t have made it so obvious by changing his killing patterns immediately, but Light says that he wants to kill L and defeat him in his own game.

- The third time is when Light is going home and Ryuk tells him that he’s being followed by someone. Light looks into it and finds out that L hired 12 FBI agents to follow some family members of the Task Force. Light plans the next day’s events and finds out his follower’s name. Later on, Kira catches Raye Penber(the FBI agent who was following Light) off guard at a railway station and makes him write all the names of the 12 FBI agents that came to investigate Kira on a sheet. That sheet turns out to be pages from the Death Note and kills all the FBI agents. This was actually a huge mistake as Raye Penber had written off Light as a Kira suspect and was moving on to the next suspect. But by killing him Light exposed himself. L checks the CCTV footage at the railway station and sees that Raye met someone at the station and after that meeting, he died. He was the first of the 12 FBI agents to die, Raye was following only 2 suspects and thus L narrowed it down from a whole country to only 2 suspects.
After this incident L starts suspecting Light and puts cameras in his home. And the game of cat and mouse starts here onwards.

The thing we have to understand is that Light could’ve easily avoided any of this if he had simply not reacted to anything done by L. If he had stayed quite then L would’ve soon given up. Which would result in L not dying and as he won’t die there is no reason to involve Near and Mello. The Kira case would have shelved as an incomplete case and Kira would have ruled the world.
