Thinking of buying a new dice set and play a game of Dungeons & Dragons?
The classic tabletop RPG is more famous than ever, thanks to a recent resurgence in pop culture. There are even shows focused entirely on people playing the game, such as Critical Role.
However, you need a good dice set to begin playing. Unfortunately, not all dice sets are the same. Continue reading our guide below to learn about the factors you should consider when buying a dice set:
Variety of Dice
The first thing to consider is the variety of dice that comes with the set. The standard set should come with seven dice: a 20-sided die, one 12-sided die, two 10-sided dice, one eight-sided die, one six-sided die, and a four-sided die.
Some sets only come with one 10-sided die, however. Those that come with two 10-sided dice often feature one to represent 10s and the other for single-digit numbers. To roll for 100 or for percentages, you’ll have to roll it twice.
Materials Used
Always consider the material used for the dice set too. Most new dice sets use plastic, which ensures they roll well and last long.
You can also find a decent gemstone dice set too, like an amethyst dice set. They are a bit more brittle than plastic, so make sure to look for one made with care. You can try this gemstone set as a good start.
Size of the Dice
Don’t forget to check the size of your dice set too! The standard D&D dice set is 16mm in size but you’ll also find dice that are as small as 5-7mm. You’ll also find larger dice, from 19mm to as big as 25mm.
The problem with small dice sets is the higher risk of losing them. Larger dice are great but they might not fit a dice tower. They’re also heavier and more cumbersome to bring around.
Clarity of the Print
Before upgrading your dice set, make sure the ones you’re getting have clear print. Dice that use fancy print or unique materials are nice but you might not be able to read the numbers. Some dice look great but won’t have readable print until you place them on top of light.
At the end of the day, you have to be able to clearly read the print during a game. Otherwise, you’ll waste time during a game trying to read the numbers.
